Soundtrack 2

Developing your own soundtrack

Words to describe my soundtrack

  1. Tense
  2. Frantic
  3. Dark
  4. Classic

My soundtrack will really help tell my story because there is no dialogue in the film. The music will portray the feelings of the film and reflect the actions and emotions within the film. Each section of music is going to be created for each scene of the film and the theme of each section will be represented in the music.

1 - Tense

-Live sound. There is no dialogue in my film but some live sound may be used. To make it tense I may use the sound of the echoing footsteps in the village hall scene.

- ADR/Foley/SFX. There will be some sound effects used. Most will be recorded at the shoot and dubbed onto the clips. For example, a door slamming for creating a tense feel.

- Music. There will be music used to create the primary tension. For the finale of my film there is a slow beat track that keeps it very quiet and disturbing.

- Ambience. There is not ambience sound used to create tension because silence creates tension.

2 - Frantic

-Live sound. There is no live sound for the frantic themes because I do not need them. There aren't any frantic sounds that fit the situation.

- ADR/Foley/SFX. There are also no sound effects etc for this section because they are not needed for the theme.

- Music. This will be the primary soundtrack for he tense section of the film. I will be using a more frantic version of the main theme music of the film. It will include glockenspiel, strings and piano

- Ambience. There is no ambience sound for this, it is all controlled by the music.

3 - Dark

- Live sound. There is no live sound for this section, I will be using dark music.

- ADR/Foley/SFX. There are no SFX to create a dark feeling.

- Music. The music will be a deep waltz, and be slower for darker scenes. There is also a lullaby song that is fairly dark and also gets darker as the story does.

- Ambience. There is no ambience to make a dark feeling. There is a lot of small silent bits which do create a dark feeling.

4 - Classic

- Live sound. There is no live sound that creates a classic feeling.

- ADR/Foley/SFX. There are no SFX that create a classic feeling.

- Music. The music I am using is a Waltz for the main theme, that is altered for different scenes. There is also a lullaby that is also altered at certain points. Both the waltz and lullaby give the film a very classic feeling.

- Ambience. There is no ambience that create a classic feeling.

End of year show preparation

Storyboards - Why they were not required

When planning my final project I wrote out my idea in script form and shot list form. After doing these I tried to start on some storyboards. But the shots that I had planned in my head and written about did not look the same when they were drawn. They frames didn't match up to what I wanted so I decided to use my written planning and mental planning for filming. Because I am the Director, Camera operator and editor I felt that no body else needed to know how the shot should be. I know myself how it should look, so from this perspective I found it wouldn't be practical to take time trying to get storyboards exact to how I wanted. I need to spend my time gathering/making props, meeting with the actress and working on costumes and equipment. I feel that my current amount of planning is enough to film and edit with ease.

The Character Tree - Film Crit Hulk

Character – Abby (known simply as ‘the girl’)

FEET
What does this person look like?

- Young, petite girl with long, blonde hair. She wears vintage-style dresses and pins her hair back

Where do they live?

- In a small town, with a very local theme

Where did they go to school?

- Local Primary school; still attending. Wouldn’t go to another school because most people in town stay local

Do they have tattoos? Why?

- No, she’s 9 years old

Who is their best friend?

- Doesn’t have a best friend. Gets along with most people but prefers to be alone with her toys

What is their occupation?

- No occupation, still in Primary school

GROIN AND GUTS

What does this person want?

- She wants to be safe, out of the way and with her toys.  She wants to continue living as she did before problems started. She relies on her toys and wants to spend all of her time with them.

How does their sexuality manifest itself?

- She is too young to know much about herself. She stays away from most people and isn’t interested in any kind of relations

What do they feel about the classic “sins”?

- She is learning about life but at this point in her life she isn’t concerned about the ‘sins’. She doesn’t concern herself with Lust, Wrath or Pride. She isn’t bothered by gluttony; if she wants to eat then she’ll eat. She can be very lazy, so Sloth is also not a problem. She has no real trouble with Greed or Envy. She doesn’t envy people and she doesn’t want much apart from her safety.

What about them is really basic and puerile?

- She is a child. She’s quite mature for her age when it comes to life situations but wants to spend all her time with her toys and is very dependant on them.

HEART

What does this person need?

- Needs to regain her mental stability and have a normal life by defeating the bear. She needs to stop the torment.

What will make them a more functional person?

- Communicate with others more often and make human connections. Needs to grow up and become less dependant on the company of toys.

Do they need to find self-confidence? Humility?

- She needs to find confidence in the outside world. She needs to be confident in herself to face life properly instead of hiding away. She has one treasured memory where she was self-confident and feeds off that.

Do they need to provide for their family?

- No. She is a child in an ordinary family. Parents are friendly and they have a nice house.

THROAT

How does this person sound?

- Quiet girly voice

How do they project themselves?

- Very quiet, only speaks when she needs to. Doesn’t shout, doesn’t need to

How do they try to come off to other people?

She acts how she thinks is normal, but quiet. She wants people to think that she doesn’t talk because she simply doesn’t want to communicate. She isn’t scared, she just wants to be alone, and she’s more comfortable that way.

How do they actually come off to other people?

- People actually see her as a shy, uneasy girl who is scared of everyone. She is also seen to not let anyone in.

LEFT CHEEK

What is their intelligence?

- Good at school. But has little intelligence of society because she stays away from it.

How does this manifest itself?

It means that getting into the outside world and being less of a shut-in is less likely if she doesn’t learn about society. But, because she has no social-life distractions she can study and do well at school.

How practical are they?

-  She isn’t very practical unless it’s schoolwork. She doesn’t do much else apart from playing with her toys.

How do they solve problems?

- When it comes to social problems she just ignores them and doesn’t solve them. She’s quiet when told off by her parents and just accepts it. When it comes to a serious problem she will act on it bravely.

RIGHT CHEEK

What is their artistic/creative capacity?

- Has big capability of being very creative but she never expresses those needs or feelings

What elements are not practical?

She can’t function an ordinary life, she shuts herself away and doesn’t make friends or do anything creative.

What is their spirituality?

- Not a spiritual person; stays quiet during school teachings of such things

CROWN

Review your answers. Do they represent a consistent character psychology?

I think my character is consistent. She may avoid social issues but she does fight against issues that she feels are more important.

What are their defining memories?

Her fondest memory is when she performed at the local village hall in a dance show. She felt confident in herself and was dancing in her own little world and ignored all humans that were watching her. She was relaxed and content.

How, in a nutshell, do they behave?

Loner, quiet but very brave

Beat sheet

Mapping 'A Knight's Tale' to 15 beats

1) Opening image

- Slow motion jousting with titles and voice over explaining the medieval sport. The voice over ends with 'but for his peasant squire William, it was merely the beginning.

2) Theme stated

- About to Joust in Sir Ector's place. William says 'I've waited my whole life for this moment'. He wants to be a knight and joust.

3) Set-up

- Win the tournament pretending to be another knight and sell the prize and finally have money to eat. William now wants to continue because jousting is his dream.

4) Catalyst

- Persuades the others to help him pretend to be a knight so he can joust and uses the recurring line - a man can change his stars.

5) Debate

- Training for jousting, isn't going well but he improves during sequence. Then on their way to tournament and meet new character, they need a patience of nobility to compete, he agrees to supply a fake one if he can accompany them.

6) Break into two

- Enter the tournament, succeed with their fake patience and prepare for 2 events; sword and joust.

7) B-story

- We meet Jocelyn. William wishes to learn her name. Start b-story love interest.

8) Fun and games

- William wins lots of matches, gains an enemy, tilts against the Prince, falls in love, gains a blacksmith companion and new armour.

9) Midpoint

- Count Adhemar is called away for battle; William cannot beat him in the tournament and Jocelyn leaves annoyed at William.

10) Bad guys close in

- William wins Jocelyn back by proving his love by first losing every match on purpose and then winning. Very happy, he tracks down his father in London at the championships. He is followed by a spy hired by Adhemar (now back from battle) because he hears that William may be a fraud.

11) All is lost

- William is about to face Adhemar in the championship and is arrested when his patience is proved fake.

12) Dark night of the soul

- He is put in a cell and abused by Adhemar and then put in the stocks for London to abuse him with shouting and throwing old food. But his friends stand by him.

13) Break into three

- The Black Prince knights William because of an earlier meeting in the joust.

14) Finale

- William can now compete but is quite weak from the stocks. He does is first round and is struck hard causing a piece of the lance to be lodged in his shoulder. He does the next round but because of his shoulder he drops the lance and is struck again. His armour is now causing discomfort so he removes it and straps the lance to his arm so he can't drop it. He is told that his father is there for the championship with Jocelyn and he wants to make his father proud, but could die. He tilts against Adhemar and knocks him off his horse and wins the tournament. He celebrates and runs to see Jocelyn.

15) Final image

- William and Jocelyn are kissing and smiling to each other and the background disappears and becomes a starry night. This relates to the often used phase throughout the film 'a man can change his stars'.

Viral advert pre-production

Proposal
For the viral advert project I decided to make a short ad for my Final Major Project. It will be fully made using Motion Graphics. It will have a shadow of a teddy bear running across a wall. There will also be a section of bubbles rising with the film title fading in and out.

Treatment/script
A shadow of a bear runs across a wall. Scene fades out to black.  Then the full brain will be shown and then it will fade out. Bubbles rise up the black screen and the title 'Unbearable' fades in and then out.

Storyboard

Shot list
Long shot of bear shadow moving across wall
Wide shot of black screen
Long shot of bubbles rising
Pan in on bubbles and title
Close up bubbles rising

Production schedule
Bear made before any filming of FMP commences. I completed making the bear shadow sequence on the 31st of January because I did not need any FMP preparation to make it. But when it comes to my title sequence i'm going to need to wait until I have decided on the film title. It will be surrounded by bubbles because it links to the ending of the film and this title sequence will also be used for the final film.

- I left a large gap between the 2 sessions when making this advert because I couldn't proceed until I had decided on a title. The title sequence was finally completed on the 25th April and I'm glad I waited until I was happy with my title.
